Netvořice City Museum

Muzejní 46, 257 44 Netvořice

The museum in Netvořice was established as a municipal museum in 1919 with the support of the municipality and the Association of Native People from Netvořice and its surroundings. Originally it was located in the house No. 7, in 1924 it acquired a separate building, which is still there today. The museum has a remarkable collection of Týnec stoneware, as well as a collection of applied art and objects of folk creativity - coins, medals, plaques and decorations.

The Museum was founded by the Museum Association for the Preservation of Monuments of Netvořice and its Surroundings, whose founding meeting took place on 1 November 1919. At the end of 1922, the Museum Association had 126 members. The main supporters of the museum were the village of Netvořice and the Prague-based "Society of Natives of Netvořice and its Surroundings". The collections were mostly based on donations from the members of the Native Society. In 1924, the municipal council allocated a house with a garden in the former manor yard for the museum and its growing collections. This was extended in 1931 and a second floor was added. This gave the museum building its present form.

Until the beginning of the Second World War, the members of the Museum Association worked to improve and add to the collections, especially the unique collection of products from the defunct stoneware manufactory in Týnec nad Sázavou. This activity was forcibly interrupted by the occupation and subsequent forced eviction of Netvořice. The museum collections were hastily transported to Benešov. After the end of the war, with the return of the displaced Netvořák people, the Museum Association began to work again. Thanks to it, most of the museum exhibits returned in 1947. In 1952, when the association ceased its activities, the administration of the museum was transferred to the municipality of Netvořice.

In the 1990s, the museum building gradually began to be reconstructed and the collections better organised. The activities of the Native Association were also restored and it was re-established under the name of the "Native Association and Friends of the Museum in Netvorice".
